Italian offshore legend Giovanni Soldini won the 2008 Ostar (Artemis Transat). That’s when he and Boris Herrmann met as rivals (Boris being 2nd) and friends in the fantastic class40 racing class.

Just two years later Giovanni offered Boris to join him in his new project with Maserati. Since then they continuously sail together on his VOR70 race yacht “Maserati”, a 24 meter racing machine with a 5.5 meter long canting keel. This boat had been Ericsson 3 in his former life during the Volvo Ocean Race.

Together with an international team they have sailed approximately 80.000 nautical miles and almost two times around the world – adding up the different routes over the past years. Highlights were the establishment of a very fast reference time for monohulls on the Columbus Route from East to West across the Atlantic, victory and outright record in the 2014 Cape to Rio race, world record of 47 days for the Gold Route around America and sailing against the winds at Cape Horn.

This project is a great friends-affair as well as a fantastic training ground for Boris in all aspects of offshore racing towards a future Volvo Ocean Race or similar endeavors. During some of the oceanic deliveries he could skipper the 70-foot yacht and 8-10 people team learning a lot about team dynamics and leadership. Sailing alongside talented offshore veteran Giovanni Soldini means a lot of good time as well as good learning to Boris Herrmann.
