Boris Herrmann – Malizia – Yacht Club de Monaco

Boris Herrmann sailing on Malizia – Yacht Club de Monaco has finished the Bermudes 1000 race in 6th place.

The start of the race went really well for Boris and he kept a strong hold on a podium position for most of the race. However, at 11.35am on 16 May 2019 Boris Herrmann on Malizia – Yacht Club de Monaco had a technical issue and so slowed down to the assess the situation. After communication with the shore crew and the race committee he decided that it was safe to continue albeit at a slower pace. The main aim for Boris was to finish the race without causing any risk to Malizia and so he significantly reduced speed and slowly moved down from 2ndplace. There is no major damage to the boat.

The shore crew are there to meet Boris in Brest and will assess the situation further and take the boat back to Lorient where, if needed, any repairs will be carried out as quickly as possible.

Although Boris had this issue it was still a great race for him and one where he learnt a lot to prepare him for his main goal, the Vendee Globe 2020. There was a lot of close racing between Boris, Yannick and Sam Davies and Boris commented that “racing so close to your competitors allows you to monitor your progress and change your approach to make sure you stay ahead”.

Boris added that “learning more about Malizia and sailing more races solo in all offshore conditions is going to be key to preparing for the Vendee and so this was a great race to test those skills. Of course I am disappointed about the result having held 2ndplace for so long but my main focus was on Malizia. These are all things that can be fixed and are great lessons which will only make me, the boat and the team stronger.”

Boris consulted with team founder Pierre Casiraghi and together they decided to continue and complete the race after it was assessed that the issue was not too serious and in so doing has kept himself at the top of the Vendee Globe qualifying leader board for miles sailed and also moved him to 2ndplace on the IMOCA Globe Series leader board.
