**Boris Herrmann reports on his collision with a fishing boat in the Vendee Globe.

Shortly before the finish of the Vendee Globe Race, things took a dramatic turn for German sailor Boris Herrmann. His vessel, Seaexplorer – Yacht Club de Monaco collided with a fishing trawler 85 nautical miles from the finish line in Les Sables d’Olonne, France. The collision damaged the race yacht, so Herrmann could only continue at a reduced speed. Boris himself was uninjured, and there were no casualties on the fishing trawler either.

“Suddenly I saw a wall next to me, the boats got tangled up, I heard men shouting,” Herrmann reports. His vessel’s bowsprit was broken off, its headsail torn, and the starboard hydrofoil was damaged. Most critically, the starboard shroud broke off, the cable that secures the mast and stops it from falling over. In the hours following the collision, Herrmann worked feverishly to replace the shroud in order to reach his final destination safely.

In a video message, Boris Herrmann recounts the collision that shattered all dreams of a German victory. “I have never experienced anything like this at sea before,” Herrmann said, “but the most important thing is that no one was hurt.”

The collision is another test in the toughest race in the world, but not one that will keep Boris from seeing it through to the end. On Thursday morning, the 39-year-old skipper from Hamburg plans to sail his ship across the finish line off Les Sables d’Olonne, after 81 days at sea. Onshore, his wife Birte, his daughter and his team are already eagerly awaiting his return and proud of his great achievement.

Kurz vor dem Ziel der Vendee Globe Regatta nahm das Rennen für den deutschen Segler Boris Herrmann eine dramatische Wendung. Sein Schiff, die Seaexplorer – Yacht Club de Monaco kollidierte 85 Nautische Meilen vor dem Ziel im französischen Les Sables d’Olonne mit einem Fischtrawler. Durch die Kollision wurde die Yacht vom Typ Imoca60 beschädigt, so dass Herrmann das Rennen nur mit reduzierter Geschwindigkeit fortsetzen konnte. Herrmann selbst blieb unverletzt, auch auf dem Fischkutter gab es keine Verletzten.

„Plötzlich sah ich eine Wand neben mir, die Schiffe verhakten sich, ich hörte Männer rufen.“, berichtet Herrmann. Der Bugsprit seines Schiffes wurde abgebrochen, sein Vorsegel zerriss, ein Tragflügel wurde beschädigt. Besonders kritisch war, dass das Steuerbord-Want abriss, die Leine, die den Mast seitlich gegen Umfallen sichert. In den Stunden nach der Kollision arbeite Herrmann fieberhaft, das Want zu ersetzen, um sicher das Ziel zu erreichen.

In einer Videobotschaft berichtet Boris Herrmann von der Kollision, die alle Träume von einem deutschen Sieg zunichte macht. „So etwas habe ich auf See noch nie erlebt“, so Herrmann, „aber das wichtigste ist, dass niemand verletzt wurde.“

Die Kollision ist eine weitere Probe in dieser härtesten Regatta der Welt, aber keine, die Herrmann davon abhalten wird, die Regatta zum Ende zu bringen. Am Donnerstagvormittag will der 39 Jahre alte Skipper sein Schiff vor Les Sables d‘Olonne über die Ziellinie segeln, nach 81 Tagen auf See. An Land warten bereits sehnsüchtig seine Frau Birte, seine Tochter und sein Team auf seine Rückkehr.

Peu avant l’arrivée du Vendée Globe, la course a pris un tournant dramatique pour le navigateur allemand Boris Herrmann. Son bateau, Seaexplorer – Yacht Club de Monaco, est entré en collision avec un chalutier de pêche à 85 milles nautiques de la ligne d’arrivée aux Sables d’Olonne. Suite à la collision, le bateau du type Imoca60 a été endommagé, si bien qu’Herrmann peut seulement continuer la course à vitesse réduite. Herrmann lui-même n’a pas été blessé et à bord du chalutier il n’y a pas non plus de blessés.

« Tout d’un coup, j’ai vu un mur à côté de moi, les bateaux se sont emmêlés, j’ai entendu des hommes crier », raconte Herrmann. Le bout dehors de son bateau a été cassé, sa voile d’avant déchirée et un foil a été endommagé. Plus grave encore, le hauban tribord s’est rompu, le câble qui empêche le mât de tomber sur le côté. Dans les heures suivant la collision, Herrmann a travaillé fiévreusement pour remplacer le hauban afin de pouvoir rejoindre la destination en toute sécurité.

Dans un message vidéo, Boris Herrmann parle de la collision qui a brisé tous les rêves d’une victoire allemande. « Je n’ai jamais vécu une telle chose en mer », a déclaré Herrmann, « mais le plus important c’est que personne n’a été blessé. »

La collision est un autre test dans la course la plus difficile au monde, mais ce n’est pas un test, qui empêchera Herrmann de la mener à bien. Jeudi matin, le skipper de 39 ans prévoit de franchir la ligne d’arrivée au large des Sables d’Olonne, après 81 jours de mer. À terre, sa femme Birte, sa fille et son équipe attendent déjà avec impatience son retour.
