Rare ocean climate data transmitted live from Seaexplorer – Yacht Club de Monaco

German skipper, Boris Herrmann has been racing his yacht Seaexplorer – Yacht Club de Monaco solo for over 60 days around the world, through the remote Southern Ocean, in the Vendée Globe ocean race. At the same time as competing in one of the toughest ocean races in the world, Boris is also furthering the scientific community’s knowledge on ocean climate change.

For the last three years the team has been gathering data via a SubCtech ocean laboratory installed onboard, similar to instruments used on the big research vessels.

The autonomous laboratory pumps seawater in and up through the keel and continuously measures three main parameters – ocean surface CO2, temperature and salinity. These parameters allow scientists to better understand the impacts of climate change on the ocean, and how the ocean is moderating climate change. Until now there has been almost no data from this remote region; now with the help of Boris and Seaexplorer, for the first time the scientific community has a picture of Southern Ocean health through a lap of the world.

Dr. Stefan Raimund, the team’s partner scientific consultant, commented: “It is always exciting to see scientific data coming in from a race boat!”

“It is an incredible data set, especially the data from the remote South Atlantic – this is very valuable for us. This area is a blank spot on the map of CO2 observations and makes your input so important for the scientific community.”

The team’s partner scientists, Dr. Peter Landschützer from the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology and Dr. Toste Tanhua from Geomar, Kiel, are currently preparing the data received to date for submission to the SOCAT database. This database makes the data available worldwide to all scientists. Researchers can use this open access data in order to better understand the global carbon cycle or to feed complex computer models for climate change predictions.

Dr. Tanhua said: “The South Atlantic and the Southern Ocean are quite an unknown in terms of climate data, although a major driver of the global climate. That is what makes this type of data so valuable and very exciting for ocean climate scientists to analyse.”

Dr. Landschützer added: “The data collected by Seaexplorer is already being used in the Global Carbon Budget 2020: https://essd.copernicus.org/articles/12/3269/2020/ This is one of the most influential carbon cycle science studies in the world and the fact that the team is contributing to it in this way is really impressive.”

For Boris this scientific mission comes hand in hand with racing, so it was an easy decision to help the scientific community whilst racing in the remotest and most inhospitable areas of the world. The additional weight was never a concern as the team saw this as a much greater mission.

Boris commented: “The Vendée Globe is a race I would like to win but there is a much bigger race, the race we must win, the race against time to find solutions for climate change. This is something we are very concerned about with our partners. A special thanks to all our partners especially Yacht Club de Monaco, Kuehne+Nagel, MSC, CMA CGM and Hapag-Lloyd for uniting behind this common goal and working towards solutions. This is more than a race, this is also a scientific voyage with our scientific partners and IOC-UNESCO.

The importance of the oceans cannot be highlighted enough, without the oceans there would be no life on earth. As a main player in our climate system they store more than 90% of the excess heat from radiative forcing and they absorb about a quarter of the annually emitted manmade CO2. However, the increase in heat content and the CO2 induced acidification impacts the health of the ocean. This is why we pursue our ocean research mission to protect this incredible wilderness. I hope to inspire you all through this race to do more to protect our climate.”

Shipping and Yachting sector united behind one goal

Furthermore, our two main partners, Kuehne+Nagel and The Yacht Club de Monaco both have CO2 measuring initiatives of their own. Kuehne+Nagel developed the digital seaexplorer platform which reports on and visualises the carbon emissions of various maritime transport services worldwide and enables customers to choose the service with the lowest CO2 emissions.

HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco said the day before the start of the Vendée Globe: “I welcome Boris’s initiative whose environmental action we support through the Yacht Club and my Foundation. Climate change is one of our biggest challenges. In line with the United Nations’ sustainable development goals for 2030, the next ten years must focus on oceanography to underpin our scientific knowledge and promote the emergence of new solutions to hopefully reverse the cycle of decline in the health of our oceans.”

The CO2 reduction objective has also mobilised key players in the luxury yacht sector at the instigation of the Yacht Club de Monaco which set up the Superyacht Eco Association (SEA) Index, a benchmark for measuring the environmental impact of 40+m yachts. SEA Index helps owners assess and improve their environmental performance with a view to reducing their carbon emissions.

Der deutsche Skipper Boris Herrmann segelt an Bord seiner Yacht Seaexplorer – Yacht Club de Monaco im Rahmen des Vendée Globe Rennens nun schon seit über 60 Tagen allein um die Welt – unter anderem durch das entlegene Südpolarmeer. Während er an einer der härtesten Hochseeregatten der Welt teilnimmt, weitet Boris die Kenntnisse der wissenschaftlichen Gemeinschaft über den Klimawandel im Ozean aus.

A Race We Must Win – Ein Rennen, das wir gewinnen müssen

Seit drei Jahren sammelt das Team Daten mittels eines SubCtech-Ozeanlabors, das an Bord installiert ist und Instrumente verwendet, wie sie ähnlich auch auf großen Forschungsschiffen eingesetzt werden.

Das autonom arbeitende Labor pumpt Meerwasser in und durch den Kiel nach oben und misst kontinuierlich drei Hauptparameter: CO2-Wert, Temperatur und Salzgehalt – jeweils an der Meeresoberfläche. Diese Parameter ermöglichen es den Wissenschaftlern, die Auswirkungen des Klimawandels auf den Ozean besser verstehen zu können, und gleichzeitig festzustellen, wie der Ozean den Klimawandel mäßigt. Bisher gab es so gut wie keine Daten aus diesen abgelegenen Regionen; nun erhält die wissenschaftliche Gemeinschaft mit Hilfe von Boris und Seaexplorer zum ersten Mal ein Bild über den Gesundheitszustand des Südlichen Ozeans im Rahmen einer Weltumseglung.

Dr. Stefan Raimund, wissenschaftlicher Berater des Teams, kommentierte: “Es ist immer wieder spannend, wissenschaftliche Daten von einem Rennboot aus zu erhalten! Es ist ein unglaublicher Datensatz, vor allem die Daten aus dem abgelegenen Südatlantik – diese sind sehr wertvoll für uns. Dieses Gebiet ist ein weißer Fleck auf der Landkarte der CO2-Beobachtungen und macht Ihren Beitrag so wichtig für die wissenschaftliche Gemeinschaft.”

Die Partner-Wissenschaftler des Teams, Dr. Peter Landschützer vom Max-Planck-Institut für Meteorologie und Dr. Toste Tanhua von Geomar, Kiel, bereiten aktuell die bisher erhaltenen Daten für die Eingabe in die SOCAT-Datenbank vor. Diese Datenbank stellt ihre Daten weltweit allen Wissenschaftlern zur Verfügung. Forscher können diese frei zugänglichen Daten nutzen, um den globalen Kohlenstoffkreislauf besser zu verstehen oder in komplexe Computermodelle für Vorhersagen des Klimawandels einzuspeisen.

Dr. Tanhua sagte: „Der Südatlantik und das Südpolarmeer sind eine ziemliche Unbekannte in Bezug auf Klimadaten, obwohl sie eine wichtige Rolle im globalen Klima spielen. Das macht diese Art von Daten so wertvoll für uns und es ist sehr spannend für die Ozean-Klimaforscher diese zu analysieren.”

Dr. Landschützer fügte hinzu: “Die von Seaexplorer gesammelten Daten werden bereits für das Global Carbon Budget 2020 genutzt: https://essd.copernicus.org/articles/12/3269/2020/ Dies ist eine der einflussreichsten wissenschaftlichen Studien zum Kohlenstoffkreislauf in der Welt und die Tatsache, dass das Team so dazu beiträgt, ist wirklich beeindruckend.”

Für Boris geht diese wissenschaftliche Mission Hand in Hand mit dem Regattasport – daher war es eine einfache Entscheidung, der wissenschaftlichen Gemeinschaft zu helfen, während er in den entlegensten und unwirtlichsten Gebieten der Welt sein Rennen bestreitet. Das zusätzliche Gewicht war nie ein Problem, da das gesamte Team den wissenschaftlichen Beitrag als eine viel größere Mission betrachtet.

Boris kommentierte: “Die Vendee Globe ist ein Rennen, das ich gerne gewinnen würde, aber es gibt ein viel größeres Rennen, das Rennen, das wir gewinnen müssen: Das Rennen gegen die Zeit, um Lösungen für den Klimawandel zu finden. Das ist etwas, was uns gemeinsam mit unseren Partnern sehr am Herzen liegt und beschäftigt. Ein besonderer Dank gilt all unseren Partnern, insbesondere dem Yacht Club de Monaco, Kühne + Nagel, MSC, CMA CGM und Hapag-Lloyd, die sich hinter diesem gemeinsamen Ziel vereinen und an Lösungen arbeiten. Dies ist mehr als ein Rennen, dies ist auch eine wissenschaftliche Reise mit unseren wissenschaftlichen Partnern und der IOC-UNESCO.

Die Bedeutung der Ozeane kann nicht genug hervorgehoben werden, denn ohne die Ozeane gäbe es kein Leben auf der Erde. Als Hauptakteur in unserem Klimasystem speichern sie mehr als 90 % der überschüssigen Wärme aus dem Strahlungsantrieb  und sie absorbieren etwa ein Viertel des jährlich vom Menschen ausgestoßenen CO2. Doch der Anstieg des Wärmegehalts sowie die CO2-induzierte Versauerung beeinträchtigen die Gesundheit der Ozeane. Deshalb verfolgen wir unsere Mission der Meeresforschung, um diese unglaubliche Wildnis zu schützen. Ich hoffe, dass ich Viele durch dieses Rennen inspirieren kann, mehr für den Schutz unseres Klimas zu tun.”

Schifffahrts- und Yacht-Branche vereinen sich hinter einem Ziel

Darüber hinaus haben unsere beiden Hauptpartner, Kühne + Nagel und der Yacht Club de Monaco, jeweils eigene Initiativen zur CO2-Messung. So hat Kühne + Nagel hat die digitale Plattform seaexplorer entwickelt, die über die Kohlenstoffemissionen von verschiedenen Seetransportdiensten weltweit berichtet sowie visualisiert und den Kunden damit ermöglicht, den Dienst mit den geringsten CO2-Emissionen zu wählen.

S.D. Fürst Albert II. von Monaco sagte am Tag vor dem Start der Vendée Globe: “Ich begrüße die Initiative von Boris, dessen Umweltaktionen wir durch den Yacht Club und meine Stiftung unterstützen. Der Klimawandel ist eine der größten Herausforderungen für uns. Im Einklang mit den Zielen für nachhaltige Entwicklung der Vereinten Nationen für 2030 müssen wir uns in den nächsten zehn Jahren auf die Ozeanografie konzentrieren, um unsere wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse zu untermauern und die Entwicklung neuer Lösungen zu fördern, die hoffentlich die Spirale der Verschlechterung der Gesundheit unserer Ozeane umkehren.”

Das Ziel der CO2-Reduzierung hat auf Betreiben des Yacht Club de Monaco auch wichtige Akteure im Luxusyacht-Sektor mobilisiert. So wurde der Superyacht Eco Association (SEA) Index ins Leben gerufen hat – ein Maßstab zur Messung der Umweltauswirkungen von 40+m Yachten. Der SEA-Index hilft Eignern, ihre Umweltleistung zu bewerten und zu verbessern, mit dem Blick, ihre Kohlenstoffemissionen zu reduzieren.

Seaexplorer – Yacht Club de Monaco récolte

et transmet en direct des données océanographiques rares

Le skipper allemand Boris Herrmann mène son IMOCA Seaexplorer – Yacht Club de Monaco depuis 60 jours dans ce 9e Vendée Globe, course autour du monde en solitaire de 24 296 milles nautiques, qui traverse notamment l’océan Austral. Alors qu’il est engagé dans l’une des épreuves océaniques les plus difficiles du monde, Boris, également membre de la Commission Océanique Intergouvernementale de l’UNESCO, entend aussi faire progresser les connaissances de la communauté scientifique sur le changement climatique océanique.

Depuis trois ans, l’équipe collecte des données via un laboratoire océanique SubCtech installé à bord, similaire aux instruments utilisés sur les grands navires de recherche. Ce laboratoire autonome pompe de l’eau de mer à travers la quille et mesure en continu trois paramètres principaux : le CO2 à la surface de l’océan, la température et la salinité. Cela permet aux scientifiques de mieux comprendre les impacts du changement climatique sur l’océan et quel rôle l’océan joue dans le changement climatique. Jusqu’à présent, il n’y avait pratiquement aucune donnée provenant de cette région éloignée ; maintenant, avec l’aide de Boris et de Seaexplorer-Yacht Club de Monaco, la communauté scientifique dispose d’un état des lieux précis de la santé de l’océan Austral, qui a pu être réalisé pour la première fois lors de ce tour du monde.

« C’est toujours passionnant de voir des données scientifiques provenir d’un voilier de course ! » a commenté le Dr Stefan Raimund, consultant scientifique de l’équipe. C’est un ensemble de données incroyables, en particulier celles provenant de l’Atlantique Sud éloigné, c’est très précieux pour nous. Cette zone est un point vide sur la carte des observations de CO2 et rend la contribution de Boris si importante pour la communauté scientifique ».

Les scientifiques partenaires de l’équipe, le Dr Peter Landschutzer de l’Institut Max Planck de météorologie et le Dr Toste Tanhua de Geomar, Kiel, traitent actuellement les données reçues pour les soumettre à la base internationale de données SOCAT. Cette dernière les met à disposition des scientifiques du monde entier. Les chercheurs peuvent ainsi les utiliser en libre accès afin de mieux comprendre le cycle global du dioxyde de carbone ou d’alimenter des modèles informatiques complexes pour établir les prévisions du changement climatique.

« L’Atlantique Sud et l’océan Austral sont une véritable inconnue en termes de données climatiques, bien qu’ils influent de manière prépondérante sur le climat mondial. C’est ce qui rend ces informations si précieuses et très intéressantes à analyser pour les climatologues océaniques » a déclaré le Dr Tanhua.

« Les données collectées par Seaexplorer-Yacht Club de Monaco sont déjà utilisées dans le cadre du Global Carbon Budget 2020 (https://essd.copernicus.org/articles/12/3269/2020/). C’est l’une des études scientifiques sur le cycle du carbone les plus influentes au monde et le fait que l’équipe y contribue de cette manière est vraiment impressionnant » ajoute le Dr Landschutzer.

Pour Boris, cette mission scientifique va de pair avec la course. Il a donc été facile de décider d’aider la communauté scientifique tout en naviguant dans les régions les plus éloignées et les plus inhospitalières du monde. Le poids supplémentaire embarqué n’a jamais été une préoccupation pour l’équipe qui a toujours considéré l’importance d’une telle mission environnementale.

« Le Vendée Globe est une course que je voudrais gagner, mais le défi que nous devons remporter, c’est celui qui nous permettra de trouver des solutions au changement climatique. Cela nous préoccupe beaucoup avec nos partenaires. Je tiens par ailleurs à les remercier, notamment le Yacht Club de Monaco, Kuehne+Nagel, MSC, CMA CGM et Hapag-Lloyd pour s’être unis derrière cet objectif commun et avoir travaillé à la recherche de solutions. Plus qu’une course, il s’agit d’une mission scientifique menée aux côtés de nos partenaires et le CIO-UNESCO. » a commenté Boris.

« On ne soulignera jamais assez l’importance des océans, sans eux il n’y aurait pas de vie sur terre. En tant qu’acteurs majeurs de notre système climatique, ils stockent plus de 90 % de l’excès de chaleur provenant du forçage radiatif et absorbent environ un quart du CO2 produit par l’homme et émis annuellement. L’augmentation de la température et l’acidification induite par le CO2 ont un impact sur la santé de l’océan. C’est pourquoi nous poursuivons notre mission de recherche océanique pour protéger cette incroyable nature sauvage. J’espère vous inspirer tout au long de cette course à faire plus pour protéger notre climat. »

Le fret maritime et la grande plaisance unis dans un même but

En outre, rappelons que Kuehne+Nagel et le Yacht Club de Monaco, ont tous deux lancé des initiatives visant à réduire l’impact du CO2 sur l’environnement. Le premier a développé la plateforme numérique Seaexplorer, qui fait état des émissions de carbone du fret maritime dans le monde entier et permet à ses clients de choisir le service ayant les plus faibles émissions de CO2 .

« Je me félicite de l’initiative de Boris dont nous soutenons l’action environnementale, à travers le Yacht Club et ma Fondation. Le changement climatique est l’un de nos plus grands défis. Conformément aux objectifs de développement durable des Nations Unies pour 2030, les dix prochaines années doivent être axées sur l’océanographie pour étayer nos connaissances scientifiques et promouvoir l’émergence de nouvelles solutions pour inverser, nous l’espérons, le cycle de déclin de la santé des océans » avait déclaré S.A.S. le Prince Albert II de Monaco, la veille du départ du Vendée Globe.

Cet objectif de réduction mobilise également les acteurs de la grande plaisance sous l’impulsion du Yacht Club de Monaco qui a créé un Superyacht Eco Association (SEA) Index, un référentiel pour mesurer l’impact environnemental des yachts de plus de 40 mètres. L’indice est conçu pour évaluer et améliorer leurs performances environnementales afin de réduire leurs émissions de carbone.
