Vendée-Arctic-Les Sables d’Olonne on July 4th (EN)

A few months before the start of the Vendée Globe, the German sailor Boris Herrmann will be at the start of the Vendée-Arctic race – Les Sables d’Olonne aboard “Seaexplorer – Yacht Club de Monaco”. This single- handed race, will take the 21 sailors from France to the coast of Iceland, near the Arctic Circle and then on to the Azores before heading back to France. The race is estimated to take 10 to 12 days and will be the first nautical event since the Corona health crisis. The race is designed as strong solo training before the big deadline of the solo round the world race.

The 39-year-old skipper who has been sailing the oceans for almost 20 years, will set off on 4th July with a twofold objective: to train by testing the boat in race conditions in preparation for the Vendée Globe and to collect scientific data from the ocean. In collaboration with the IOC-UNESCO, Boris will place an Argo profiling float near to Iceland to measure water salinity and temperature. At the same time, he will provide essential data to the scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, Geomar in Kiel and Ifremer, thanks to his high-tech onboard SubCtech laboratory. This device measures ocean surface CO2 which is key to help scientists better understand the impacts of climate change in our oceans and as Boris often sails in remote locations this data is often scarce.

Malizia II, renamed “Seaexplorer – Yacht Club de Monaco,” after the arrival of a new partner with shared values, the world leader in logistics, Kuehne + Nagel. “The Malizia team and Kuehne + Nagel share the common goal of improving the health of the oceans. Both partners base their approach on the wealth of scientific evidence that proves that the health of the oceans is ultimately essential to human well- being.” said Boris Herrmann. Seaexplorer is the intelligent digital platform created by Kuehne + Nagel it provides CO2 emissions data on the world’s largest network of the ocean freight services with the aim of allowing customers to make intelligent transport choices to create a sustainable future in shipping. The team will also add three new secondary partners’ logos to their sails with MSC, CMA CGM and Hapag-Lloyd joining for the Vendée campaign and the team will continue to have the great support of EFG Private Bank.

The yacht was launched in 2015 for the 2016 Vendée Globe skippered by Sébastien Josse and taken over in March 2017 by Boris Herrmann, it finished, under the colours of the Yacht Club de Monaco, 3rd in the Fastnet Race 2017 (with Pierre Casiraghi), 4th in the Transat Jacques Vabre 2017 (with Thomas Ruyant) and 5th in the Route du Rhum 2018.

In 2019, Boris Herrmann and Pierre Casiraghi took aboard Malizia II, the young Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg to New York for her speech on climate change at the United Nations conference, before taking part a few months later in the Transat Jacques Vabre 2019, where he finished 12th.

This winter, “Seaexplorer – Yacht Club de Monaco” which is based in Lorient, underwent a complete refit with the addition of new foils!

The improvements have created a highly competitive IMOCA that the German skipper hopes will prove successful for the Vendée-Arctique Les Sables d’Olonne starting on 4th July.

As an ocean lover and environmentalist, Boris does not envisage his sporting challenge without a concrete commitment to the protection of the oceans. A commitment he shares with Pierre Casiraghi, President of the Yacht Club de Monaco and co-founder of the Malizia Ocean Challenge Project combining sailing, science and education.

The team name Malizia chosen by Pierre symbolises the deep attachment of the Grimaldi family and the Principality of Monaco to the sea.

The Malizia Ocean Challenge aims to promote ocean science, protection and education worldwide while inspiring the next generation with sailing adventures by participating in the world’s greatest races.

To date, more than 10,000 school children have worked with the team’s Malizia Ocean Challenge kids kit which was developed to teach children aged between 8-14 about climate change and the ocean. This kit was created in English, German and French and will soon be rolled out in more languages and can be downloaded for free here :

Le skipper Boris Herrmann au départ du Vendée-Arctique-Les Sables d’Olonne le 4 juillet (FR)

A quelques mois du départ du Vendée Globe, l’Allemand Boris Herrmann sera au départ de la course Vendée-Arctique-Les Sables d’Olonne à bord du “Seaexplorer – Yacht Club de Monaco”. Cette course qui mènera pendant 10 jours les 21 marins au large de l’Islande, du cercle arctique, puis des Açores, sera la première épreuve nautique depuis la crise sanitaire. Une préparation avant la grande échéance du tour du monde en solitaire.

Le germanique de 39 ans qui sillonne les océans depuis près de 20 ans partira le 4 juillet avec un double objectif : s’entraîner en testant le bateau dans des conditions de course en prévision du Vendée Globe et collecter des données scientifiques sur les fonds marins.

En collaboration avec le programme IOC-UNESCO, Boris déposera un flotteur profileur Argo au large de l’Islande pour mesurer la salinité et la température de l’eau. En parallèle, il fournira, grâce à son laboratoire de haute technologie mesurant le CO2 à la surface de l’océan à des endroits éloignés et très difficiles d’accès, des données essentielles aux scientifiques des programmes de l’Institut Max Planck de Météorologie, Géomar, Kiel et l’Ifremer.

Malizia II, rebaptisé “Seaexplorer – Yacht Club de Monaco”, après l’arrivée d’un nouveau partenaire aux valeurs communes, leader mondial de la logistique, Kuehne + Nagel.

Seaexplorer est la plateforme numérique intelligente créée par Kuehne + Nagel qui fournit des informations au plus grand réseau de services de fret maritime du monde dans le respect d’un avenir durable.

Au départ du Vendée Globe, 3 nouveaux sponsors s’afficheront sur les voiles du Seaexplorer-Yacht Club de Monaco, avec la présence de MSC, CMA CGM et Hapag-Lloyd au côté d’EFG Private Bank.

Mis à l’eau en 2015 pour le Vendée Globe 2016 et skippé par Sébastien Josse, il a été repris en mars 2017 par Boris Herrmann qui termine, sous les couleurs du Yacht Club de Monaco, 3ème de la Fastnet Race 2017 (avec Pierre Casiraghi), 4ème de la Transat Jacques Vabre 2017 (avec Thomas Ruyant) et cinquième de la Route du Rhum 2018.

En 2019, c’est à bord du Malizia II que Boris Herrmann et Pierre Casiraghi convoient la jeune suédoise militante écologique Greta Thunberg à New York, pour son intervention sur le climat lors de la conférence des Nations Unies, avant de participer quelques mois plus tard à la Transat Jacques Vabre 2019 où il finira 12e.

Le Malizia Ocean Challenge pour la protection des océans

Cet amoureux de la mer et de son environnement, membre de la Commission Océanique Intergouvernementale de l’UNESCO, n’envisage pas ses défis sportifs sans un engagement concret de la protection des océans. Un engagement qu’il partage avec Pierre Casiraghi, président du Yacht Club de

Monaco co-fondateur du Projet Malizia Ocean Challenge, combinant la voile, la science et l’éducation. Ce nom, Malizia, choisi par Pierre symbolise l’attachement profond de la famille Grimaldi et de la Principauté de Monaco à la mer.

Le Malizia Ocean Challenge ambitionne de promouvoir les sciences océaniques, la protection et l’éducation dans le monde entier tout en inspirant la prochaine génération avec des aventures de voile en participant aux plus grandes régates dans le monde entier.

Jusqu’à aujourd’hui, plus de 10 000 enfants dans les écoles ont été sensibilisés sur la vie des océans tout en leur apprenant les changements climatiques grâce à un kit multi-langues conçu spécialement pour eux.

Wenige Monate vor dem Start der Vendée Globe nimmt der Deutsche Profi-Segler Boris Herrmann an Bord der “Seaexplorer – Yacht Club de Monaco” an der Vendée-Arctic-Les Sables d’Olonne teil. Dieses Rennen, welches 21 Segler binnen zehn Tagen an Island vorbei bis zum Polarkreis und anschließend zu den Azoren führen wird, ist die erste internationale Segelregatta seit Ausbruch der Coronakrise. Sie gilt als letzte große Vorbereitung auf die legendäre Solo-Weltumsegelung, die Ende dieses Jahres in Frankreich starten wird.

Der 39-jährige Deutsche, der seit fast 20 Jahren auf den Weltmeeren unterwegs ist, verfolgt mit seinem Start am 4. Juli zwei Ziele: Zum einen das kürzlich umgebaute Boot unter Rennbedingungen im Hinblick auf die Vendée Globe zu testen und zum zweiten, wissenschaftliche Daten an der Meeresoberfläche zu erheben.

In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Programm der Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) der UNESCO wird Boris Herrmann vor Island eine Driftboje aussetzen, um den Salzgehalt und die Temperatur des Wassers zu messen. Parallel dazu wird er mithilfe seines High-Tech-Labors, welches CO2 im Ozean an entlegenen und sehr schwer zugänglichen Orten misst, wichtige Daten liefern. Diese werden an Wissenschaftler übermittelt, die an den Programmen des Max-Planck-Instituts für Meteorologie, GEOMAR (Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel) und des französischen Meeresforschungszentrums Ifremer arbeiten.

Das Team Malizia verfolgt gemeinsam mit seinem neuen Partner – dem weltweit führenden Logistikanbieter Küehne + Nagel – die gleichen Ziele. Im Rahmen der Partnerschaft hat das Boot, die “Malizia II”, einen neuen Namen bekommen: ” Seaexplorer – Yacht Club de Monaco”.

Seaexplorer ist eine von Küehne + Nagel geschaffene digitale Plattform. Sie schafft Überblick über alle angebotenen Seelogistikdienste und bietet Nutzern die Möglichkeit, die nachhaltigste Transportmöglichkeit auszuwählen.

„Mit ihrer Kooperation wollen Küehne + Nagel und das Team Malizia mithelfen, die Gesundheit der Ozeane zu verbessern. Beide Partner stützen ihren Ansatz auf wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse, die beweisen, dass die Gesundheit der Weltmeere letztlich für das Wohlergehen des Menschen mitverantwortlich ist“, erklärt Boris Herrmann.

Bei der Vendée Globe werden neben der EFG Private Bank mit MSC, SMA CGM und Hapag-Lloyd außerdem noch drei weitere neue Sponsoren auf den Segeln der “Seaexplorer-Yacht Club de Monaco” zu sehen sein.

Das Boot, 2015 für Sébastien Josse gebaut wurde, segelte erstmals 2016 die Vendée Globe. Im März 2017 übernahm Boris Herrmann die Imoca 60. Für den Yacht Club de Monaco startend wurde er beim Fastnet Race 2017 mit Co-Skipper Pierre Casiraghi Dritter, Vierter bei der Transat Jacques Vabre 2017 mit Thomas Ruyant und schließlich Fünfter bei der Route du Rhum 2018, die er solo segelte.

An Bord der “Malizia II” begleiteten Boris Herrmann und Pierre Casiraghi 2019 schließlich die junge schwedische Umweltaktivistin Greta Thunberg nach New York, wo sie bei einer Konferenz der Vereinten Nationen eine vielbeachtete Rede zum Klimaschutz gehalten hat. Wenige Monate später nahm Boris Herrmann mit Co- Skipper Will Harris am Transat Jacques Vabre 2019 teil und belegte den zwölften Platz.

In diesem Winter wurde die “Seaexplorer – Yacht Club de Monaco”, die in Lorient/Frankreich liegt, generalüberholt und mit Foils der neuesten Generation ausgerüstet.

An Bord seiner wettkampfstarken IMOCA-Yacht wird der deutsche Skipper und frischgebackene Vater am 4. Juli einhand bei der Vendée-Arctic-Les Sables d’Olonne starten und dabei bereits die Teilnahme an der Vendée Globe am 8. November 2020 im Blick haben.

Die Malizia Ocean Challenge für den Schutz der Weltmeere

Der Deutsche, der das Meer und die Natur liebt und Mitglied der Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) der UNESCO ist, verliert bei allen sportlichen Herausforderungen nie den konkreten Einsatz zum Schutz der Ozeane aus den Augen. Dies ist eine Eigenschaft, die er mit

Pierre Casiraghi, Präsident des Yacht Club de Monaco und Mitbegründer des Projekts Malizia Ocean Challenge, teilt. Das Projekt verbindet Segelsport, Wissenschaft und Bildung. Der von Pierre Casiraghi gewählte Name “Malizia“ versinnbildlicht die tiefe Verbundenheit der Familie Grimaldi und des Fürstentums Monaco mit dem Meer .

Die Malizia Ocean Challenge hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, die ozeanografischen Wissenschaften, den Schutz der Meere und die Aufklärung über den Klimawandel weltweit zu fördern und die nächste Generation anhand der Segel-Abenteuer während der größten Regatten der Welt für dieses wichtige Thema zu begeistern.

 Bis heute wurden mehr als 10.000 Schulkinder mithilfe eines eigens für sie konzipierten, mehrsprachigen Lernpakets für die wichtige Rolle der Ozeane im Ökosystem sensibilisiert und über den Klimawandel aufgeklärt.
