The last leg of The Ocean Race European finishes with Will Harris’s team, Akzonobel Ocean Racing in 2nd position

17th June 2021

12 international crews competed in The Ocean Race Europe Tour, which started 3 weeks ago from Lorient, France. Five IMOCA 60 and seven VO65 high-performance ocean-going yachts representing nine countries and crewed by professional sailors from across Europe and around the world were the ones competing.

Our team did not participate this time, but our co-skipper Will Harris did, onboard Akzonobel Racing Team’s VO65 as their navigator and after a very close finish with the Portuguese Mirpuri Foundation Racing Team, who had the same points at the start of the last leg, they came second. But the battle is not over, on Saturday the teams will compete on a coastal race which will determine the podium.

This tour is great training for Will, who will be joining Boris Herrmann onboard our new IMOCA 60 next year in the the full Ocean Race which starts in Alicante in October 2022 and which will go around the world for 9 months stopping in 10 cities.

Will Harris says: “That was a very challenging leg tactically. We had light winds basically from the start with the fleet doing snakes and ladders most of the way. After the start we struggled to be in the top pack and that meant the leaders extended a 30 mile lead on us. Towards the end we managed to make a big tactical decision to find more wind that the boats ahead and sailed past them to take 2nd place. Happy to have this result but now the race is on for winning overall with the final coastal race on Saturday. “

Start of the Third Leg of The Ocean Race Europe, from Alicante, Spain, to Genoa, Italy.
