Boris Herrmann crosses the remotest location in the world, Point Nemo

On the evening of the 51st day of the 9th edition of the Vendee Globe, Boris Herrmann passes south of Point Nemo. This is a point in the Pacific Ocean which is the furthest point from any land. This remote ocean location is about 2688km from any land, the closest being Ducie Island which is part of the Pitcairn Islands. The point got its name after author Jules Verne’s famous Captain Nemo and translates from Latin to mean no-one!

Boris is currently so far from land that he is actually much closer to the International Space Station; when it orbits Earth it is only 416km from his location. This area is so hard to get to that there is very little known about the area or the sea life that inhabits it. In fact, the most common visits are probably that of the sailors on the round the world races.

The last three days have seen Herrmann go from light winds and flat seas to then battling it out with crossed seas and gusty winds, with his ranking moving between 3rd to 7th. To have all the top boats so close together, at this point in the race has never happened before. There is only 150nm between 2nd and 10th place, with just over 60% of the race completed, there is still a lot to play for in this race and the rankings could still change a lot over the next weeks. There is currently only some 300nm between Herrmann and first placed Yannick Bestaven. The German skipper is expected back into Les Sables D’Olonne at the very end of January.

Am Abend des 51. Tages der 9. Auflage der Vendee Globe passiert Boris Herrmann an südlicher Seite Point Nemo. Dies ist ein Punkt im Pazifischen Ozean, der am weitesten von jedem Land entfernt ist. Dieser abgelegene Ort mitten im Ozean ist etwa 2688 km von festem Land entfernt, am nächsten liegt die Insel Ducie Island, die zu den Pitcairn-Inseln gehört. Der Punkt erhielt seinen Namen nach dem berühmten Kapitän Nemo des Autors Jules Verne und bedeutet aus dem Lateinischen übersetzt “niemand”!

Boris ist derzeit so weit von Land entfernt, dass er eigentlich sogar viel näher an der Internationalen Raumstation ist, denn umkreist diese die Erde, ist sie nur 416 km von seinem aktuellen Standort entfernt. Dieses Gebiet ist so schwer zu erreichen, dass nur sehr wenig über die Gegend allgemein oder das Meeresleben, das dort existiert, bekannt ist. In der Tat sind die häufigsten Besucher wahrscheinlich die Segler während ihrer Weltumseglungen.

In den letzten drei Tagen wechselte für Herrmann leichter Wind und flache See zu böigem Wind und gekreuzter See, wobei sich seine Platzierung zwischen Rang 3 und 7 bewegte. Dass alle Top-Boote zu diesem Zeitpunkt des Rennens so dicht beieinander liegen, hat es bisher noch nie gegeben. Zwischen dem 2. und dem 10. Platz liegen nur 150 Seemeilen, wobei gerade einmal 60% des Rennens absolviert sind. Zwischen Herrmann und dem Erstplatzierten Yannick Bestaven liegen derzeit nur etwa 300 Seemeilen. Der deutsche Skipper wird erst Ende Januar wieder in Les Sables D’Olonne erwartet.

Le soir du 51ième jour de la 9ième édition du Vendée Globe, Boris Herrmann passe au sud du Point Nemo. C’est un point dans l’océan Pacifique qui est le plus éloigné de toute terre. Cet endroit isolé au milieu de l’océan est à environ 2688 km de la terre ferme, la plus proche étant l’île Ducie, qui fait partie des îles Pitcairn. Le point a été nommé d’après le célèbre capitaine Nemo de l’auteur Jules Verne, et traduit du latin signifie “personne” !

Boris est actuellement si loin de la terre qu’il est en fait beaucoup plus proche de la Station spatiale internationale, car si elle est en orbite autour de la Terre, elle n’est qu’à 416 km de sa position actuelle. Comme il est si difficile de parvenir à cette zone, on sait encore très peu sur la région en général ou sur la vie marine qui y existe. En fait, les visiteurs les plus fréquents sont probablement les marins à l’occasion de leurs tours du monde.

Au cours des trois derniers jours, les vents légers et la mer plate se sont transformés en rafales et en mer croisée pour Herrmann, son classement variant entre la 3ième et la 7ième place. Jamais auparavant les meilleurs bateaux n’ont été aussi proches les uns des autres à ce point de la course. Seulement 150 milles nautiques séparent la 2ième et la 10ième place, avec 60% de la course complété jusqu’ici. À ce moment, l‘écart entre Herrmann et le leader Yannick Bestaven est d’environ 300 milles nautiques. Le skipper allemand n’est pas attendu aux Sables d’Olonne avant la fin du mois de janvier.
