The Malizia Mangrove Park project, initiated by Boris Herrmann, reaches the important milestone of 350.000 mangroves planted!

The Malizia Mangrove Park in Mindanao, Philippines, initiated by Boris Herrmann and launched in November 2020 as a joint project between Boris Herrmann and the Mama Earth Foundation, aims to plant one million mangroves in Mati Bay in southern Mindanao. Boris Herrmann was the first German to successfully complete the world’s toughest ocean sailing race, the Vendée Globe Race.

The Malizia Mangrove Park project aims to achieve the following goals:

Mangroves store large amounts of CO2 and, in addition, introduce a lot of CO2 permanently into the soil. This makes them a great help in the fight against climate change.

Mangroves grow on tropical coasts in salt and brackish water. They actively protect the coast against wave action and land loss due to rising sea levels. This also protects offshore reefs from being washed over by sand.

Mangroves form a unique biotope on the coasts and thus ensure the protection of species.

They also protect the abundance of fish and other marine life, such as crabs and mussels. The goal is to preserve and strengthen this biotope and to rebuild it where it has already been lost.

This biodiversity in turn enables the fishing families on the coasts to make a living. Also, the raising of the seedlings and the planting is done by the local residents and helps them to earn additional income for their livelihood.

The Malizia Mangrove Park is under the scientific direction of the State College located in the city of Mati. Experienced scientists accompany the project and ensure that the plantings are carried out with the right native species in the right proportions. This will ensure that the new plantings can grow together with the existing mangroves to form a stable mangrove forest that is sustainable and self-sustaining in the future.

Further, students and school children are involved in the plantings and the studies. On the one hand, this is to gain new scientific knowledge about the mangroves e.g. about the binding of CO2 in the plants and in the soil, and on the other hand, to sensitise the pupils and students for the topics of environmental, coastal and marine protection.

The progress of the planting can be followed on the park’s website and anyone can become a partner in this project by making a donation, thus contributing to the reconstruction of the coastal mangrove belt and its conservation. The landing page on the website is updated daily and shows, among other things, through a counter, how far the action has progressed.

As shown above, mangroves are an important factor in the fight against climate change and the conservation of biodiversity. Planting mangroves is effective and cheap, 3 mangroves cost 1 euro.

Das vom Profisegler Boris Herrmann initiierte Projekt Malizia Mangrove Park erreicht als wichtigen Meilenstein die Marke von 350.000 gepflanzten Mangroven!

Der Malizia Mangrove Park auf Mindanao, Philippinen, initiiert von Boris Herrmann und gestartet im November 2020 als Gemeinschaftsprojekt von Boris Herrmann und der Mama Earth Foundation, hat das Ziel, eine Million Mangroven in der Bucht von Mati im Süden von Mindanao zu pflanzen. Boris Herrmann hat als erster Deutscher die härteste Hochseesegelregatta der Welt, das Vendée Globe Race, erfolgreich abgeschlossen.

Mit dem Projekt Malizia Mangrove Park sollen die folgenden Ziele erreicht werden:

Mangroven speichern große Mengen an CO2 und bringen dazu noch viel CO2 dauerhaft in den Boden ein. Dadurch sind sie eine große Hilfe im Kampf gegen den Klimawandel.

Mangroven wachsen an den tropischen Küsten im Salz- und Brackwasser. Sie schützen die Küste aktiv gegen Wellenschlag und Landverluste durch den steigenden Meeresspiegel. Dadurch werden auch die vor der Küste liegenden Riffe davor geschützt, vom Sand überspült zu werden.

Mangroven bilden an den Küsten ein einzigartiges Biotop und sichern damit den Artenschutz.

Damit schützen sie auch den Reichtum an Fischen und anderen Meeresbewohnern, wie Krebsen und Muscheln. Das Ziel ist es, dieses Biotop zu erhalten und zu stärken und dort, wo es schon verloren gegangen ist, wieder aufzubauen.

Diese Artenvielfalt wiederum ermöglicht den Fischerfamilien an den Küsten ein Auskommen. Auch die Aufzucht der Setzlinge und das Pflanzen wird von den lokalen Anwohnern gemacht und verhilft ihnen zu zusätzlichen Einnahmen für ihren Lebensunterhalt.

Der Malizia Mangrove Park steht unter wissenschaftlicher Leitung des in der Stadt Mati ansässigen State College. Erfahrene Wissenschaftler begleiten das Projekt und sorgen auch dafür, dass die Anpflanzungen mit den richtigen einheimischen Arten im richtigen Verhältnis durchgeführt werden. Dadurch wird sichergestellt, dass die neuen Anpflanzungen mit den schon vorhandenen Mangroven zu einem stabilen Mangrovenwald zusammenwachsen können, der nachhaltig ist und sich in der Zukunft selbst erhält.

Weiter sind Studenten und Schüler in die Pflanzungen und die Studien mit einbezogen. Dadurch sollen zum einen neue wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse über die Mangroven, z.B. über die Bindung von CO2 in den Pflanzen und im Erdreich gewonnen werden, und zum anderen sollen die Schüler und Studenten für die Themen Umwelt-, Küsten- und Meeresschutz sensibilisiert werden.

Auf der Webseite des Parks kann der Fortgang der Pflanzungen verfolgt werden und jeder kann über eine Spende Partner bei diesem Projekt werden und damit einen Teil zu dem Wiederaufbau des Mangrovengürtels an der Küste und dessen Erhaltung beitragen. Die Landing Page auf der Webseite wird täglich aktualisiert und zeigt unter anderem durch einen Zähler an, wie weit die Aktion forstgeschritten ist.

Wie oben dargestellt, sind Mangroven ein wichtiger Faktor für den Kampf gegen den Klimawandel und den Erhalt der Artenvielfalt. Mangroven zu pflanzen ist wirksam und günstig:
